My estranged uncle was a poet whose trembling hands incited my grandfather’s fury. Harsh words fueled by spirits flew across the dining room table like poison darts. My uncle retreated into a cosmos of buds, blooms, shifting sands, and waving grasses—dunes beneath the sun and the moon. His palsy didn’t keep him from painting portraits of lilies, composing orchestras of starlight, and choreographing dances of wind and fire. It was through poetry that he unfurled his wings, through poetry that others soared with him, and through poetry that the forsaken found healing. I never knew him, but he left words like a beckoning path of steppingstones for me to follow. This is the power of poetry—it can spirit you away to places unknown, lost, or forbidden.
